Why do pine-needle baskets cost so much?

You have probably looked at coiled pine-needle baskets and wondered why they are priced so high. The main reason is because coiling pine-needle baskets is very time-consuming. It is very tedious work requiring many hours of practice to master.

When creating a coiled basket, I need to add new pine needles with every stitch. There are several types of stitches, and the time required for each stitch varies greatly. It can take an experienced coiler an hour to complete just one row of a 4 diameter basket.

Most people who make pine-needle baskets do so for their own use and simply enjoy creating them. It is relaxing and therapeutic, allowing me to forget about distractions and concentrate on something I enjoy.
